Lough Derg

Lakeside Lodge

Lough Derg

Lakeside Lodge is located near the village of Mountshannon on the western shore of Lough Derg in eastern County Clare. Lough Derg is one of the three lakes (beside Lough Allen and Lough Ree) on the River Shannon. Its maximum north-south extent between the towns of Portumna in the north and Killaloe in the south is 35 kms. The deepest point is at Parkers Point, with a small ditch down to 36 m. In the north of the lake there are extensive shallow water areas with an average water depth of 4 m. The tributary of the Shannon is at Portumna, the outflow at Killaloe.
Holy Island (Inis Cealtra)
There are a number of uninhabited islands in the lake. The largest island with 0.61 sqm is Illaunmore, the most famous is Holy Island , Irish Inis Cealtra . It is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland. Its many attractions include a well-preserved Round Tower, the ruins of six churches, a Holy Well, a unique graveyard with slabs dating from the eight century, Bullaun Stones, a cell like structure, which is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Ireland and a ‘bargaining’ stone where many a marriage was brokered. You can use our boat to row to the island - provided the weather is suitable -, but a good physical condition is essential! Alternatively, we can take you to the island.
Mountshannon harbour
County Clare is centrally located on the west coast of Ireland and ideal as a starting point for exploring the Northwest (Connemara), the Southwest (Kerry) and the Midlands (Tipperary, Offaly, Limerick). The county does not only offer scenic highlights such as the Cliffs of Moher or the Burren, but is predominantly known for the hospitality of its people and the traditional music tradition! Whether you've been to Ireland before and now just want to enjoy more of the 'original Ireland', or whether you want to take advantage of the central location of Clare for your trips to Connemara and Kerry, Lakeside Lodge is a great place to stay at!
